Apple revoked the notarization of the iTorrent app without warning, leading to its disappearance from the alternative app store AltStore PAL in the European Union. This decision affected millions of users who gained access to torrent clients thanks to new DMA regulations.

iTorrent is a fully functional torrent client for iOS that allows users to download files directly to their devices. The app was available through AltStore PAL - one of the first alternative app stores in Europe that emerged after the Digital Markets Act came into force.

AltStore PAL developer Riley Testut stated that Apple provided no explanations regarding the app's blocking. The company simply revoked iTorrent's notarization, which automatically made it unavailable for download in the alternative store.

This event raises questions about how independent alternative app stores are from Apple's control. Despite DMA requirements to open the iOS ecosystem to competitors, Apple maintains significant control through the notarization process.

Torrent technology itself is legal and used for distributing various content, including open-source software and media files with appropriate licenses. However, Apple has traditionally restricted such applications in its App Store.
