Opera has officially filed a complaint against Microsoft, accusing the tech giant of using unfair methods to coerce Windows users into using the Edge browser instead of alternative solutions.

Norwegian company Opera Software has officially taken a stand against Microsoft's practices related to promoting the Edge browser in the Windows operating system. The complaint was filed with relevant regulatory authorities with accusations of anti-competitive behavior.

At the center of the conflict are Microsoft's controversial methods that the company uses to retain users within its ecosystem of products. Opera claims that Microsoft complicates the process of changing the default browser, uses intrusive notifications and warnings when attempting to install alternative browsers, and integrates Edge so deeply into the system that it's practically impossible to completely remove.

Opera representatives note that such Microsoft actions violate fair competition principles and limit consumer choice. The company points out that users should have the right to freely choose a browser without pressure from the operating system developer.

This complaint is not the first of its kind. Previously, Microsoft has already faced criticism and regulatory measures from various jurisdictions for similar practices. The European Commission and other antitrust bodies have repeatedly investigated the company's actions regarding competition in the browser market.

Microsoft has not yet provided an official comment regarding Opera's complaint, however, the company traditionally defends its position, claiming that all Edge integrations are aimed at improving user experience and system security.

The results of the complaint review could significantly impact future versions of Windows and Microsoft's policy regarding promotion of its own products. This could also establish important precedents for other technology companies in matters of integrating their services into operating systems.
