Google has announced the discontinuation of Android Instant Apps support in December 2025, ending a nearly decade-long experiment with instant app technology.

Google has officially announced the end of support for the Android Instant Apps feature in December 2025. This technology, launched in 2017, allowed users to run portions of mobile applications without fully installing them on their devices.
What are Android Instant Apps
Android Instant Apps were lightweight versions of regular applications with a maximum size of 15 MB. They loaded instantly and worked directly from the Google Play Store or through web links, without requiring installation on the user's device.
Reasons for Shutdown
The primary reason for discontinuing support was low popularity among users. With the development of faster internet and increased built-in storage capacity in smartphones, the need for such technology has significantly decreased.
What Changes for Developers
A warning has already appeared in Android Studio: "Instant Apps support will be removed by Google Play in December 2025. Publishing and all Google Play Instant APIs will no longer work." Developers will no longer be able to publish new instant apps, and existing ones will lose support.
Alternatives
Google recommends developers focus on web technologies and Progressive Web Apps (PWA) as alternatives to instant apps. These solutions provide similar functionality without requiring special platform support.
