At WWDC 2025, Apple made a significant announcement about the future support for Mac computers with Intel processors. Senior Director of Developer Relations Matthew Firlik officially confirmed that macOS Tahoe will be the last major operating system update for Intel chip-based devices.
End of the Intel Mac Era
After macOS Tahoe's release in fall 2025, Mac computers with Intel processors will no longer receive major operating system updates. This decision marks Apple's complete transition to its own M-series processors and the end of x86 architecture support.
Apple representative Lauren Clague assured users that Intel-based Mac devices compatible with macOS Tahoe will continue to receive critical security updates for three years following the operating system's release.
Compatible Device List
macOS Tahoe will support the following devices:
- MacBook Air with Apple processor (2020 and later)
- MacBook Pro with Apple processor (2020 and later)
- MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
- iMac (2020 and later)
- Mac mini (2020 and later)
- Mac Studio (2022 and later)
- Mac Pro (2019 and later)
New Features in macOS Tahoe
Despite being the final update for Intel Macs, macOS Tahoe brings significant improvements. The operating system receives the new Liquid Glass design language with a shinier, more transparent, and "glass-like" style, similar to updates in iOS 26.
Enhanced Spotlight
The Spotlight search system gains powerful artificial intelligence capabilities. The updated version will "intelligently" display results by predicting user queries and allow actions to be performed directly from the search interface.
iPhone Integration and Live Activities
macOS Tahoe provides closer integration with the user's iPhone and supports Live Activities functionality. The Phone, Messages, and FaceTime apps will feature a new "Live Translation" function for communication in different languages.
Availability and Beta Testing
Apple plans to release macOS Tahoe in fall 2025, with the public beta version becoming available next month. Developers can access the early version of the system now through the Developer Program.
This announcement is part of Apple's overall strategy to transition to unified software release numbering across all platforms, which should improve version understanding for customers and developers.
