The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Apple\'s emergency request to pause enforcement of a court order requiring the company to ease App Store restrictions. This means new compliance rules take effect immediately while Apple continues to appeal the decision.

The Court Ruling

Apple violated a U.S. court order that required the iPhone maker to allow greater competition for app downloads and payment methods in its lucrative App Store, ruled a federal judge in California.

Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers determined that Apple violated a court order requiring it to open up the App Store to third-party payment options and must stop charging commissions on purchases outside its software marketplace.

Apple\'s Attempt to Pause the Order

Apple had asked the appeals court to halt enforcement of the court order forcing it to ease App Store restrictions, but this request was denied. In rejecting Apple\'s motion, the court is letting those new compliance requirements stand while the company appeals the decision.

Apple had hoped to halt the enforcement until the decision was final, which would grant the company the right to roll back the changes it was recently compelled to make.

Implications for Developers

No longer forced to use Apple\'s In-App Purchase (IAP) exclusively, developers can now integrate their own payment flow via the web or other platforms, without fear of App Store rejection for \"steering\" users outside the app.

This means developers will be able to keep more of their earnings by directing users to external payment systems and avoiding Apple\'s commissions.

Epic Games\' Response

In response, Epic Games is bringing back Fortnite to the App Store in the US, as Apple will not be allowed to collect fees for external purchases effective immediately.
