X Launches Beta Testing of XChat Messenger with Advanced Encryption

Social network X has officially launched beta testing of its new XChat messenger, designed to replace the existing direct messaging system with a more functional and secure solution. Currently, access to the new feature is limited to paid platform subscribers.

Key XChat Features

XChat represents a significant improvement over the current DM (direct messages) system. The new messenger includes an expanded set of features:

• End-to-end encryption - ensures maximum protection for conversations
• Group messages - ability to create chats with multiple participants
• Disappearing messages - automatic message deletion mode
• File sharing - transmission of documents and media files
• Audio and video calls - full voice and video communication

Technical Architecture

Elon Musk announced that XChat is written in the Rust programming language and uses "Bitcoin-style encryption." According to X's head, this represents a "completely new architecture," although details of the technical implementation are not yet disclosed.

Development History

At the end of May, X suspended the encrypted private messages feature, explaining this as an effort to improve the option. Users retained the ability to view their existing encrypted messages, but sending new ones became impossible. The encrypted messaging feature first appeared in 2023 but was only available to paid subscribers.

Independent app researcher Nima Owji published screenshots of XChat's user interface in April, claiming that the new feature was already ready for release.

Strategic Goals

XChat development is part of X's broader strategy to become an "everything app," similar to China's WeChat. At a 2023 meeting, Musk announced plans to make X a full-fledged dating site and digital bank by 2024.
