Microsoft has begun actively informing Authenticator app users about upcoming changes to functionality. Starting in May 2025, users are receiving notifications with the warning: "Autofill via Authenticator ends in July 2025."

Phased Function Shutdown

Microsoft has announced the gradual discontinuation of password autofill functionality in the Authenticator app:

  • June 2025: Users will no longer be able to save new passwords in the app
  • July 2025: The autofill feature will be completely disabled, and stored payment information will be deleted
  • August 2025: All saved passwords and data will be permanently deleted from the app

How to Export Passwords

To export passwords from Microsoft Authenticator, you need to:

  1. Open the app menu
  2. Go to "Settings" → "Autofill"
  3. Select "Export Passwords"
  4. Choose a save location and tap "Save"

Important: Export is only available for account passwords; payment information cannot be exported.

Transition to Microsoft Edge

Microsoft recommends users transition to using the built-in password manager in Microsoft Edge browser. The browser provides similar autofill capabilities and data synchronization across devices.

Users will be able to access their passwords and addresses through Microsoft Edge at any time, provided they are signed into their Microsoft account.

Reasons for Changes

Microsoft's decision to disable the autofill feature in Authenticator is related to the company's strategy to centralize password management within the Microsoft Edge ecosystem. This will provide a more integrated user experience and improve security.

The Microsoft Authenticator app will retain its primary two-factor authentication function, which remains unchanged.
