Microsoft has released update KB5058411 for Windows 11 24H2, which unifies the CPU usage calculation algorithm across all Task Manager tabs, resolving the long-standing issue of inconsistent performance metrics.

In May 2025, Microsoft released a significant update KB5058411 for Windows 11 24H2 that addresses a long-standing issue with inaccurate CPU usage display in Task Manager. All tabs now use a unified calculation formula that complies with industry standards.

The Problem with the Old Algorithm

Before the update release, Windows Task Manager used different methods for calculating CPU usage across various tabs. The "Processes" tab applied the Processor Utility metric, which showed processor "usefulness," while the "Performance" and "Users" tabs used the standard processor usage time ratio.

This led to serious inconsistencies. For example, if one core of a 16-core processor was fully loaded, the system would show 100% usage, even though only 6.25% of resources were actually being used. When attempting to sum individual process indicators, it never resulted in 100%.

New Unified Approach

After installing update KB5058411, all Task Manager tabs use the formula: usage percentage = process processor time ÷ (total time × number of logical processors). This ensures mathematical accuracy - the sum of all process usage now equals the total system usage.

Additionally, the turbo mode issue was resolved - previously, cores operating above base frequencies could show values over 100%, which the system forcibly limited.

Option to Revert to Old Method

Users who prefer the previous calculation method can enable it through the "Details" tab by adding the Processor Utility column in the header context menu.

The update brings Task Manager into compliance with WMI classes used by Perfmon tools, PowerShell Get-Counter, and third-party monitoring utilities.

Detailed information about the update can be found on the official Microsoft support website.
