Micron has officially announced plans to cease DDR4 memory production within the next six to nine months. This event marks the end of an entire era in computer memory development.

Micron has officially notified its clients about the upcoming cessation of DDR4 memory production. The supply volumes of these chips will be gradually reduced over the next six to nine months, marking the end of an entire era in computer memory development.

Reasons for DDR4 Discontinuation

The main reasons for abandoning DDR4 production include growing competition from Chinese companies that have flooded the market with cheaper alternatives, as well as the industry's general transition to new memory standards. Samsung previously announced plans to completely phase out DDR4 production this year, focusing on more profitable DDR5, LPDDR5, and HBM.

Price Increases and Shortages

Despite key players leaving the market, DDR4 demand remains high. In May, prices for these modules jumped by 50%, and Micron representatives predict that shortages could lead to a situation where DDR4 becomes more expensive than newer memory types.

Transition to DDR5

Micron recommends clients transition to next-generation memory, which is becoming increasingly accessible. The company will maintain limited DDR4/LPDDR4 supplies only for long-term partners in automotive, industrial, and networking sectors, where stability is more important than high speed.

Impact of AI Technologies

RAM demand growth is evident in the PC and mobile device segment, where AI functions are increasingly widespread. Such applications require both larger memory volumes and higher bandwidth than DDR4 can provide. Apple increased the minimum RAM capacity in MacBook Air, abandoning 8GB, and many smartphones are now equipped with 12 or 16GB of memory.

Future Predictions

Experts predict that DDR4 mass production will cease in the near future as manufacturers switch to more profitable fifth-generation DDR5 memory. Among major memory manufacturers, only SK hynix has not yet announced DDR4 production cessation, but it's unlikely to avoid this trend for long.
