AMD has announced the expansion of its popular Ryzen Z2 processor series designed for portable gaming devices. The lineup now includes two new chips: the premium Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme with integrated neural processor and the affordable Ryzen Z2 A model.

Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme: Power with Artificial Intelligence

The flagship Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor represents an enhanced version of the original Z2 Extreme with an added neural processing unit (NPU). Key specifications include:

  • 8-core/16-thread CPU based on Zen 5 architecture
  • 24 MB cache
  • Graphics with 16 RDNA 3.5 cores
  • LPDDR5X-8000 memory support
  • Configurable TDP from 15 to 35W
  • NPU delivering up to 50 TOPS for AI tasks
  • Microsoft Copilot+ features support

The built-in neural processor opens new possibilities for developers: enhanced system optimization, improved real-time data processing efficiency, and intelligent power management.

Ryzen Z2 A: Affordable Solution for Mass Market

The budget-friendly Ryzen Z2 A model is built on the older but proven Zen 2 architecture. Its specifications include:

  • 4-core/8-thread Zen 2 CPU
  • 8 RDNA 2 graphics cores
  • 6 MB cache
  • LPDDR5-6400 memory support
  • 6-20W TDP for extended battery life

The low power consumption makes this processor an ideal choice for affordable portable devices with emphasis on extended battery life.

Portable Gaming Device Market Prospects

The expansion of the Ryzen Z2 lineup may stimulate the release of more portable gaming consoles in 2025. Currently, the series processors are used in Lenovo Legion Go S and Legion Go 2 Prototype, while Asus plans to introduce two new devices based on these chips, including Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X consoles developed in collaboration with Microsoft.
