Artificial intelligence has firmly entered the daily lives of millions of people around the world. A study conducted by OpenAI in collaboration with the US National Bureau of Economic Research, based on analysis of over a million dialogues, revealed dramatic changes in how people use ChatGPT since its launch.

Scale of Usage

By July 2025, ChatGPT's popularity reached impressive metrics: every second, the system processes 29,000 messages. Per week, 700 million users send 18 billion queries to the bot, demonstrating an unprecedented level of AI integration into daily life.

User Demographics Evolution

One of the most significant changes concerned the gender composition of the audience. While 80% of users were male after the bot's launch, their share has now decreased to less than half of all users. This indicates that the technology has become more accessible and attractive to a broader audience.

The age structure also shows interesting trends: 46% of all messages are sent by users aged 18 to 25, confirming AI's particular popularity among the younger generation.

Work and Personal Tasks

The analysis showed a clear division of ChatGPT usage between professional and personal purposes. 30% of queries are work-related, while 70% concern everyday matters. Notably, although the number of work tasks is growing, personal queries are increasing even faster.

Decline in Programming Popularity

An unexpected finding was the significant decrease in the share of programming-related queries. Over the year, this indicator dropped from 12% to just 4.2%. Researchers explain this by the fact that most developers have switched to using specialized AI applications for coding, such as GitHub Copilot and other professional tools.

Education and Information Search

Educational queries constitute a significant portion of ChatGPT usage. 29% of all queries are related to learning, getting instructions, and generating ideas. This confirms AI's role as a personal assistant in learning and creative processes.

The growth in search queries is particularly notable — their share increased from 14% to 24% over the year. This indicates that users increasingly perceive ChatGPT as an alternative to traditional search engines.

Text Work

24% of all queries are related to text work, with an interesting distribution of these tasks. In two-thirds of cases, users ask the bot to improve or translate existing text rather than create content from scratch. This shows that AI is more often used as an editing and improvement tool rather than as an original content generator.

Entertainment and Companions

Despite widespread media discussion of AI's potential as a companion, practical use of ChatGPT for role-playing games and as an AI companion accounts for only 0.4% of total traffic. This suggests that users primarily value AI's practical benefits.

Conclusions and Trends

The study shows that AI usage is becoming increasingly practical and integrated into daily life. Users are moving away from experimenting with technology and transitioning to solving specific tasks. The growth in popularity among female audiences and focus on educational and search queries indicates the technology's maturity and its broad acceptance by society.
