OpenAI is making a bold step into the film industry by providing funding and technology for creating the feature-length animated film "Critterz". This project will become the first of its kind cartoon created almost exclusively using artificial intelligence.

The idea's author is OpenAI creative specialist Chad Nelson, who already released a short film of the same name in 2023 using DALL-E technology. Now the team is working on a full-length feature in collaboration with British series producer Vertigo Films and specialized AI studio Native Foreign. Interestingly, the screenplay is being written by the authors of the popular film "Paddington in Peru".

"OpenAI can endlessly talk about what its tools can do, but it's much more convincing when someone actually uses them. This is much more interesting than any of my demos," explains Nelson about the project's philosophy.

Revolution in the Film Industry

According to the director, OpenAI's main goal is to prove that AI content reaches quality sufficient for big screen display and accelerate the adoption of these technologies by Hollywood studios. The company hopes to impress the industry with a combination of high quality and incredible production efficiency.

The project's financial indicators are impressive: the "Critterz" film budget is less than $30 million, which is 5-7 times smaller than the standard budget of Pixar studio animated films. Even more striking is the time factor — the entire creation process will take only 9 months instead of the traditional 3-4 years.

The "Critterz" premiere is scheduled for the prestigious 2026 Cannes Film Festival, which emphasizes the seriousness of the creators' intentions and their confidence in the final product's quality.

This project could become a turning point in animation history, demonstrating artificial intelligence's potential in creative industries and opening new opportunities for independent directors and studios with limited budgets.
