Dutch design studio Modem Works has developed a unique device called Dream Recorder that can transform human dreams into short video clips. This innovative gadget opens new possibilities for studying and visualizing subconscious imagery.

How Dream Recorder Works

The device's operating principle is quite simple: the gadget needs to be placed near the bed, and after waking up, you tell it about the content of your dreams. Dream Recorder records the voice narration and sends it to the ChatGPT system to create a structured dream "script".

After text processing, the Luma AI artificial intelligence model generates a surreal video clip that visually resembles a real dream. Created videos can be viewed directly on the device's screen, and they are also automatically saved in a personal "dream diary".

Open Source Project for Enthusiasts

A distinctive feature of the project is its complete openness. The Modem Works team has published a detailed guide for self-assembly of the device on GitHub. The archive contains software, 3D printing instructions for the case, and a complete list of required components.

To create a Dream Recorder, you'll need: a Raspberry Pi mini-computer, display, connecting cables, and microphone. The total cost of components on Amazon is approximately €285.

Usage Costs

For Dream Recorder to function, it uses paid services OpenAI and Luma AI. However, the cost of generating one video clip is only about 15 cents, making the device's usage quite affordable.
