What is Flux Kontext?

Flux Kontext represents a family of generative flow matching models that enable contextual image generation and editing. Unlike traditional text-to-image models, this new technology utilizes both textual prompts and reference images to create consistent results.

The system's main advantage lies in its ability to preserve original image elements during editing. For example, dried flowers can be replaced with a fresh rose bouquet using a simple command "change the orange flowers to a bouquet of roses", while all other image details remain unchanged.

Three Models for Different Tasks

Black Forest Labs has developed three model variants:

  • Flux Kontext Pro — base model with character, style, and feature consistency across all scenes
  • Flux Kontext Max — maximum performance model with improved prompt adherence and premium typography
  • Flux Kontext Dev — lightweight 12B-parameter transformer for fine-tuning and experiments (in closed beta)

Superiority Over Competitors

Testing on the KontextBench benchmark demonstrated Flux models' significant speed advantage. Image generation occurs up to 8 times faster than OpenAI's GPT-Image-1 while maintaining high result quality.

Particularly impressive are the local editing capabilities, character consistency, and style transfer features. The model can modify specific parts of an image without affecting other elements, which is critically important for professional use.

Practical Capabilities

Flux Kontext opens new horizons in image editing:

  • Modifying character clothing, hairstyles, and facial expressions
  • Object transformation (e.g., turning people into wooden dolls)
  • Text editing while preserving style and distortions
  • Applying artistic styles to new compositions
  • Creating consistent portraits with different angles and expressions

Availability and Cost

The technology is already available on popular platforms: Leonardo AI, Freepik, Krea AI, as well as through APIs on Fal AI and Replicate. Generation costs only $0.04 per image, making the technology widely accessible.

Users can test Flux Kontext on Black Forest Labs' official playground, receiving 200 free credits upon registration.

Open Weights and Future Development

Unlike closed systems from OpenAI and Google, Black Forest Labs plans to release open weights for the Flux Kontext Dev model. This will enable the creation of numerous specialized tools and technology adaptations.

The release of Flux Kontext marks a new era in AI image editing, offering professional-quality results with minimal time and financial investment.
