Popular dating app Grindr has introduced its new Right Now feature — a social media-style live feed that allows users to share real-time posts. The feature aims to accelerate the search process and create more spontaneous connections between users.

Grindr has announced the global rollout of Right Now — an innovative live feed feature that fundamentally changes the approach to dating within the app. Following successful pilot testing in select markets, the feature is now available to all platform users.

What is Right Now?

Unlike Grindr's traditional profile grid that shows users based on proximity, Right Now functions like an X/Twitter feed, displaying a stream of fresh posts with text and photos. Posts automatically disappear after an hour, creating a sense of spontaneity and relevance.

Key Features:

  • Temporary posts — publications disappear after one hour
  • "Hosting" toggle — option to indicate readiness to receive guests
  • Text and photos — support for various content types
  • Limited sessions — free hourly sessions that refresh every Friday

AI Features and Monetization

Right Now is part of Grindr's comprehensive strategy for implementing artificial intelligence. The company has already introduced several AI tools:

A-List uses Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 3.7 model and AWS Bedrock to create chat summaries, helping users rekindle "meaningful past connections".

Wingman — a generative AI assistant that can draft chat responses, provide dating and intimacy advice for those who don't know what to write.

Business Strategy and Future

Grindr CEO George Arison emphasized the importance of an AI-first approach: "For all the new things that we build, I want them to be built as if we are an AI-native startup".

These innovations are aimed at increasing company revenue after a difficult period following the 2022 IPO, when shares dropped by 70%.

Competition and Positioning

While Grindr isn't the first in its segment to implement social media features (competitor Sniffies has similar capabilities), Right Now represents a significant step in transforming the app into the "Global Gayborhood in Your Pocket".

Chief Product Officer AJ Balance noted: "We built this intention-based feature based on feedback from our community so they can connect with like-minded people without wasting time on mismatched expectations".
